Globally, many women and girls do not have access to appropriate Menstrual Health Management (MHM) methods (i.e. methods that are effective, comfortable, convenient, affordable and safe to use) nor knowledge on their menstrual cycles. The lack of appropriate MHM methods and knowledge has far-reaching implications for the physical, social and mental well-being of women and girls, keeping millions of women and girls from reaching their full potential. Additionally, menstruation is often surrounded by taboo and shame, which further restricts girls and women during this natural biological process and leaves them unfamiliar with their own bodies.
International Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is an international day that acts as a global initiative and platform to bring together the activism and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote and raise awareness of MHM for all women and girls. The day started in 2014 and has continued to gain momentum, with organizations, individuals, and governments across the world participating in events and activities that (1) break the silence and change negative social norms that cause menstrual stigma and taboo and (2) engage stakeholders – from grassroots-level to national-level—to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHM.
